Cheney Claims He Never Debated Edwards 10/7/2004
EWM – (Oct. 7, 2004) Vice President Dick Cheney shocked reporters today when he said that he had “never debated Senator John Edwards.” Cheney made the claim in response to questions about why he falsely stated during Tuesday’s debate that he had “never met” Edwards. That charge was immediately knocked down by file videotape showing otherwise. Here is the transcript of the interview: Reporter: Mr. Vice President, how can you explain telling a nationwide audience that you had never met John Edwards when you clearly have done so on several occasions? Cheney: Who? Reporter: Edwards, the man you debated on Tuesday. Cheney: You don’t have your facts straight. Reporter: Sir, you sat beside him during the debate and said it was the first time you had ever met him. You have met him–it was even on C-Span. Cheney: I don’t know where to start. There’s so much wrong with that. First of all, don’t believe everything you see on C-Span. And in a post-nine/eleven world we can’t afford to count in predicable patters. If we always go, first, second, third–our enemy will kill us. We have to mix it up. Third, tenth, first. Eighth, fifth, second. It’s all part of the war on terror. Reporter: (sighs) Mr. Vice President, do you intend to admit you were wrong and apologize to the Senator for what you said in the debate? Cheney: I’m not sure how you apologize to a man you have never met, much less debated. I have never met or debated this so-called John Edwards. Reporter: Thank you Mr. Vice President.
